    Our 8–16mm grade interlocks underfoot and under tyres, creating a stable, permeable surface that suits UK drainage guidance — the ideal balance of appearance and function.

    Recommended depth 40–50mm

  • Paths & walkways

    The fine 4–8mm grade is comfortable underfoot and holds firm on gentle gradients — ideal for defining routes through borders and lawns.

    Recommended depth 30–40mm

  • Borders & mulching

    A 4–8mm or 8–16mm grade suppresses weeds, retains moisture and adds contrast around planting. Laid over a quality membrane for low-maintenance beds.

  • Patio surrounds

    Frame paving or decking with a clean 8–16mm margin — a refined finish that directs drainage away from foundations.

  • Decorative ground cover

    The coarse 16–22mm and 16–32mm grades make an easily maintained, free-draining cover for larger areas — laid a little deeper to seat the larger stone.

As a rule, lay your gravel at least twice the largest stone size — so coarser grades need a little more depth. Bag quantities are per square metre, based on our 20kg bags.

How much gravel do I need for my driveway?

A typical single-car driveway (3m × 6m) at 50mm depth needs about 75–80 of our 20kg bags — roughly 1.5 tonnes. Use the calculator above for an accurate figure based on your exact dimensions. A 10% allowance is already included.

Which gravel size should I choose?

The fine 4–8mm is comfortable underfoot — ideal for paths and borders. The 8–16mm is our all-rounder, suited to driveways, patios and general landscaping. The coarse 16–22mm and 16–32mm are best for decorative ground cover and free-draining beds. As a guide, lay any grade at least twice its largest stone size.

Do I need a weed membrane under gravel?

Yes — for decorative areas, borders, and paths we strongly recommend a quality woven geotextile membrane. It suppresses weeds while allowing drainage. For driveways, the compacted sub-base layer typically provides adequate weed prevention.

How is gravel delivered?

Our gravel is supplied in 20kg bags — easy to handle and to carry through side gates. Larger orders are delivered on a kerbside pallet, with 50 bags making up a full tonne. The more you order, the more you save.

Do I need a base under my gravel?

For driveways and heavy-traffic areas, a firm, well-compacted base (100–150mm) is essential for stability and drainage. For paths and decorative areas, you can usually lay over compacted soil with a membrane underneath.

How do I maintain a gravel surface?

Gravel is very low maintenance. Rake periodically to keep it level, top up thin areas every 1–2 years, and remove leaves in autumn. If weeds appear, a targeted weed killer or manual removal is all that's needed.
